Sempra Energy Galileo International
Three-year old and ongoing migration and extension of mainframe application to a Web Based Global Energy Trading System involving over 9000 traders in Connecticut.

The application allows traders to transact in all spot, futures, forward, and swap contracts for a range of energy related products worldwide. It also performs complete financial accounting and risk management functions, and facilitates customers’ Web based tracking of their portfolio positions and risk management. Personalization functions also include customized ticker information, news, and access to public market data and transactions.

Development of a new Web-based energy trading module utilizing XML and XSL, COM+ components, SOAP components and Java applets.

Integrating the trading system with real-time market data servers for commodity trading.

Activities performed included the development of test plans, hosting and deployment plans, configuration management, and system optimization.

The extension of the mainframe system was built using COM+, Java, ODBC, OLEDB technologies and standard APIs for accessing enterprise data-sources.

APIs were developed for integrating the trading system with a broad range of corporate data-sources from such ERP packages as SAP and Oracle 11i.

Techna’s current onsite team continues to maintain the system while incrementally adding and modifying functionalities and fine tuning its performance.

This project adds to Techna’s earlier expertise acquired from a multi-year engagement with Knight Ridder in Hong Kong to create and operate one of the first client-server trading and portfolio management systems in the world.
Galileo was establishing business relationships with providers of leisure goods, entertainment offerings and additional travel applications, and integrating those applications as integral parts of its services portal, which is based on a portfolio of Galileo (local) and partner (remote) applications.

Aside from the necessary business relationships it needed to establish, Galileo realized before it could address integrating external applications it must first address its own data aggregation process within its GDS. To this end, Galileo:

a. Unveiled XML Select, a structured data application programming interface that allows third parties to create booking engines and server-based applications.

b. Embraced the IBM TravelFrame offering of business objects as a framework of Web service enabled components that can interact with Galileo's XML Select, a structured data application programming interface that allows third parties to create booking engines and server-based applications. By embracing TravelFrame, Galileo is using open industry standards to ease the integration needs for potential Galileo travel agents customers.

At its core, TravelFrame provides customers with a set of services that enable the development of e-business applications for the travel industry. The target market for TravelFrame includes, but is not limited to, airline companies, travel agents, travel portals, as well as hotels and car rental companies.

Techna helped IBM design the middleware based platform for Galileo and then performed a series of services to extend the original mainframe apps and maintain the middleware version.
